Por fin y entrando el año con fuerza, publicamos el material grafico y comentarios que nos envió el gaffer de la película Passion; Elmut Prein. El texto está original en ingles tal y como lo escribió el autor, las fotografías simplemente sublimes.
*Nota para la traducción: En dicha película bautizaron a las pantalla Cine200 de 20 tubos Dulux como las " Dolores".

On the last Brian de Palma picture "Passion" I was hired as the gaffer to the spanish Cinematography -legend Jose Luis Alcaine.
It is said that he was the first to use fluorescent lights as the key source in film lighting .
He was the one who brought up the idea to ship in a package of fluorescent lights from Madrid. These fixtures were build in Spain by cineTEL in Madrid according to the ideas of Jose Luis Alcaine and the spanish gaffers collaberates with reguarly.
Our package arriving from Madrid contained a variety of different fixtures.
6x Pantalla Cine 200 (20x Osram Dulux tubes 55W)
12x Pantalla Cine 80- 120 (8x Osram tubes 36W/ 1,2m)
12x Pantalla Cine 40- 120 (4x Osram tubes 36W/ 1,2m)
6x Pantalla Cine 20- 120 (2x Osram tubes 36W/ 1,2m)
4x Pantalla Cine 40- 60 (4x Osram tubes 18W / 0,6m)
4x Pantalla Cine 20- 60 (2x Osram tubes 18W / 0,6m)
6x Espada Cine 10- 120/ 60 (1x Osram tube 18/ 36W)
All lighting fixtures had the option to be equipped with daylight and tungsten tubes.
All fixtures are equipped with dimmers. These dimmers can be wired inline via XLR cables so you just need a single dimmer to control multiple lights; this is very handy.
The housing of all fixtures is painted white inside; this causes a much softer light than the usual silver reflectors other manufactures mostly use.
The output is slightly less but still satisfying.
To controll the light the fixtures are equipped with eggcrates.
The barndoors are not fixed to the lights. They are just sticked to the housing if needed.
This results in a very shallow profile of the fixture. In example it easy to hide a unit behind a pillar or a window reveal.
There is a variety of ways to use these fixtures. In example we joined the Cine 200 (we called the fixture Dolores…) to one big bank to balance bright daylight outside windows.
Or we joined the Cine 80 to an long band of light to cover a long stretch.
As all fluorescent these lights the power consumption is very low and setup-time as fast as the weight is pretty low. Just Dolores is a little heavy girl…
All in I enjoyed working with the Pantallas as they are easy to use and fast to set-up.
There are some things I might throw in for improvement… better dimmers and the option to have a center yoke on the housing to have more rigging options.
Perhaps there is a way to build a version of the bigger units out of carbon fibre to lower the weight especially for rigging.
